Club Med Cancun
Club Med has been around for what feels like FOREVER. What used to be a "singles party" atmosphere, limited meals and beer/wine with dinner only, has been redefined by Club Med to the total all-inclusive concept (all meals, snacks, unlimited drinks, land & water sports included). You can now choose from upscale & romantic resort, family resorts, and the good old adult/fun resorts.
Club Med Cancun is one of the adult/fun resorts, and my husband and I decided to do a quick getaway for 3 nights in August 2005 to check it out. I went in with no expectations, but what a pleasant surprise! Our rooms were large & clean, there was always something going on (that is, if you choose to drag yourself away from your chair at the pool or beach), the staff was friendly and a lot of fun, and the food was surprisingly delicious (the white and dark chocolate bread is something not to miss).
The dining choices are the Casual Grill (standard grill items), El Mexicano (the buffet restaurant), and La Palapa (the speciality, reservations only restaurant). Dining in the buffet restaurant is a "together" experience;. You are led to a table and sit with other guests. The staff dines with the guests also at each meal in the buffet dining room. Unlike "assigned tables" as on a cruise you ate with different guests and different staff members at each meal. This is a great concept, because you do end up meeting so many interesting people from all over the world ... perfect for single travelers (we met a lot of single travelers during our stay). Of note, La Palapa is not "together" dining, you can have an intimate dinner for 2 or dine with friends. There is definintely an international feel at Club Med Cancun, which was really a refreshing change.
The entertainment staff kept things going night and day for those who wanted to keep active and lively. The schedule reminds me of a cruise, where the dining room dinner times are planned so you can get to the evening entertainment if you choose.
We had a blast ... our only complaint is that we had to leave so soon. Unfortunately, Club Med Cancun took a beating with Hurricane Wilma, but plans to reopen again in March 2006. This is a high energy resort, the first resort you pass when entering the Hotel Zone from the airport. It's on a peninsula, so there is snorkeling right off the beach anytime. There are tennis courts, a weight room, a fitness studio & classes, all complimentary. Gift & jewelry shops and tour desks are onsite as well. A plus for the person who just can't disconnect is WI-FI internet access available in common areas for an additional charge.
