Thursday, February 23, 2006 at 09:20AM

Jamaica_Flag_Animated.gifSeveral new resorts are slated for development in Jamaica in the coming years which will certainly increase the options for all-inclusive resorts on the island of Jamaica, including RIU Resorts, Iberostar Resorts, Bahia Principe, and the AM Resorts brand (Secrets and Sunscape).

RIU resorts is currently constructing the RIU Palace Ocho Rios on the adjacent property to Sandals Dunns River, which will increase the number of RIU properties to choose from in Jamaica to 3 since 2001.

Iberostar Resorts plan entry to Jamaica for the first time with a project for a large new resort comprised of three facilities. The five-star Iberostar Montego Bay hotel will be the first, with 366 rooms and plans are for an opening by the end of 2006.

AM Resorts will begin work on four hotels that will create 1,700 new rooms at Oyster Bay in Trelawny .. does this mean AM Resorts will also develop a Secrets Jamaica, Dreams Jamaica and possibly a Sunscape Jamaica brand?  Keep an eye out ...

Grupo Pinero will begin construction on three new hotels totaling 1,800 rooms at Pear Tree in St. Ann.  These will operate under the Bahia Principe name.

All plans are subject to delays and name changes, of course.  Jamaica continues to bring in the top all-inclusive chains from around the world and no doubt will continue to offer a wide variety of choices for all travelers.

In addition to the new resort offerings, Jamaica's airports will begin receiving new nonstop service via Spirit Airlines with originating service from Fort Lauderdale, FL. Spirit began service on November 10, 2005 from Fort Lauderdale to Kingston, Jamaica.  Flights from Ft Lauderdale to Montego Bay began 12/15/05.  Connecting flights will be available from Atlantic City, Chicago, Detroit, New York/LGA, Providence/Boston area, and Washington's Reagan National airports.
